Junior Solar Sprint
The Junior Solar Sprint is a challenging hands-on classroom activity for students in grades 4-8.
Teams of students design, build, and race model solar power cars, and in the process learn about engineering and solar energy.
Self Reliance has hosted the local Cape & Islands Junior Solar Sprint Race for over fifteen years, and we are always looking to get more teachers, schools and programs involved.
The 2017 Cape & Islands Junior Solar Sprint Race will be held on May 20.
15th Annual Solar Sprint Race A Shining Success
It was sunny! It was sunny! For the first time in five years, the Junior Solar Sprint Race was held outside under the powerful rays of the sun!
The 15th annual Junior Solar Sprint was held on Saturday, May 21st on the tennis courts at Cape Cod Community College. Teams representing seven elementary schools from across the Cape showed off their cars and raced in multiple heats as we worked our way to a single winning car for speed. Awards were also given for Innovation, Technical Merit, Best Use of Recycled Materials and Craftsmanship.
The Junior Solar Sprint teaches students science, engineering, teamwork and renewable energy and it is always rewarding to see their hard work in action.
Thank you to our partner, Cape Cod STEM Network; our sponsors: the Society of American Military Engineers, Solar Rising and e2 Solar and to the many volunteers who help make this event possible. We would also like to thank our members and generous donors who support Self-Reliance’s work with school-aged students.
