Haiti – Isle a Vache

Since spring 2015, Self-Reliance staff and interns have been working on a project for the island of Isle a Vache, located south of Haiti. We have had the privilege of working with Patrick Lucien of the EDEM Foundation and Mass Maritime Academy professor, Tom Lennon and cadets on this effort.
With EDEM Foundation’s assistance we conducted a survey for villagers to help inform us of their needs for renewable energy, urine-diverting composting toilets and cisterns. The information gathered helped us design an off-grid solar system for pumping water and running basic power at the community school building at the farm. We are seeking funds to build a 5 kilowatt battery-based photovoltaic system, a unit of urine diverting composting toilets at Ecole du village along with cisterns there as well as other locations throughout the village.
